Maths with DST

We made a kiss (cross) out of 5 multi-link cubes. Then we talked about how to make the kiss grow and predicted how many cubes we needed to add to make the next kiss. In pairs, with our DST friends, we did some building and working out to find out the number of cubes needed for the 2nd, 3rd, 4th....kisses. Every one noticed an adding pattern. Each time we added 4 cubes to make the next kiss. Some of us worked out how many cubes would be needed for the 100th kiss. We didn't build it - there wasn't time!! We knew that we would need 401 cubes. This is what we did 4 x 100 + 1 =401. We multiplied by 4 because each kiss has 4 branches. The 100 is in the sum because we were calculating the result for the 100th kiss and +1 because there is always 1 cube in the middle to hold the branches together. Here are some pictures of us working.

Stories People Tell

In our IPC topic we are learning about stories. Old stories, new stories, stories from around the world, fairytales, true stories, myths, legends...
This week we have been especially interested in the Cinderella story and have read lots of different versions from countries around the world.
Cinderella is a very popular story in our class but maybe you have a different favourite fairytale. Please take a moment to fill in our survey.

Maths with DST

We share our school building with a German primary school. We see each other around the school and in the playground every day, but we don't normally have our lessons together. This year Frau Mira and Miss Ash decided we would meet up on Mondays to work on some maths tasks together. We started off with some activities on 2D shape.

Friendship Week

We did lots of fun activities during Friendship Week, including ones where we thought about how to be a better friend. We used our ideas about what makes a good friend to write this recipe together.

Friendship recipe
This recipe is a special friendship week dish that can be served after an argument to make things better.
Ingredients
350g of love
20 tablespoons of playfulness
250 ml of laughter
150g of trust
A big sprinkle of helpfulness
20 slices of fun
Method
1. Mix the love and playfulness until smooth.
2. Pour in the laughter stirring all the time.
3. Fold in the trust, one spoonful at a time.
4. Spoon the mixture into a deep baking tray.
5. Decorate with the sprinkles of helpfulness and the slices of fun.
6. Share with lots of other people.

Poetry

We wrote a poem together about the Mona Lisa. Lots of different people thought of ideas and then we put them into an order that we thought sounded good.
Some of us wrote our own which we will perform, record and share on the blog.

Maths Week

On Monday we didn't go to school because it was very snowy. In school there was a maths week that started on Tuesday. It was all about measuring and it was fun!
On Thursday we were sorted into our houses: Sapphire, Topaz, Emerald and Ruby. We did different activities with different teachers. With Mrs Patrick we measured the pitch with a wheel to see if an A380 plane could be parked on the pitch. It could! If we were kind or we worked well we got some house points.
Today we had a maths assembly and found out that Ruby house were this week’s winners of the House Cup.

Snow Day

School is closed for a Snow Day! How much snow have you got where you live? Can you go out in the garden or on the balcony to measure how deep it is? When you have measured post a comment with the measurement. Who has the deepest snow?
I measured 5.6 cm in my garden.

Multiplication

In maths we have been learning about multiplication. We did it with pictures to help us. We each drew different pictures and used them to invent our own multiplication problems. We would like to do it again with different pictures. PowerPoint was a good way to present our problems on the computer. We found out that we could count up in ‘lots of’ to answer multiplication questions. We learnt that 3+3=6 is the same as 3x2=6.

Venn Diagrams in Maths

Today our Maths lesson was about sorting data on a Venn diagram. We worked in pairs and below is an example showing Rhys and Jesse's work. Thanks to BEAM for a great activity idea.

Then Miss Ash had an email from Mr Noble, who teaches Maths in Secondary, saying that his class had made a huge Venn diagram on the playground. He was inviting other classes to add their information. We rushed over with our chalk! Their Venn diagram was more complicated than ours (it had 4 circles) so we spent some time working it out. Then we added our information about what we had for breakfast, by drawing a stick person in the correct place.
Here are some pictures of us working:

Thanks to Mr Noble and his students for including us. We love being in a school where Primary and Secondary can share ideas and learning.
